Support the Period Equity Project by SGA

The Period Equity Project is an initiative developed by the members of Webster’s Student Government Association. The program will provide free period products in all restrooms on campus to support student menstruators.

Facts:

According to the 2021 State of the Period:

  • 84% of students who menstruate in the U.S. have missed class time or know someone who has missed class time because they did not have access to period products.
  • 69% of menstruators feel embarrassed when they have to bring period products to the bathroom.
  • 1 in 5 menstruators age 13-19 have struggled to afford period products or were not able to purchase them at all.
  • Period poverty has been defined by the American Medical Women's Association as inadequate access to menstrual hygiene tools and education.

Details:

  • Free menstrual supplies will be available in ALL 139 restrooms on the Webster Groves campus.
  • The menstrual product dispensers are ADA compliant, include braille and Spanish words, and will be available in the men’s, women’s, and all-gender restrooms on campus.
  • The menstrual products and dispensers will be purchased from Aunt Flow, a woman-owned company.
    • Aunt Flow’s products are made with 100% organic cotton, are biodegradable, and produce about a third less waste than normal menstrual products.
 Plan of Action:
  • January 2022: Purchase dispensers for every restroom on campus and 12 months of supplies.
  • January-February 2022: Install dispensers and promote the initiative on campus.
  • March 2022: Celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8th.
  • May 28th 2022: Celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day.
  • All of spring semester 2022:
    • Share educational resources about menstruation.
    • Spread awareness about period poverty, pink taxes, and menstrual equity.
    • Discuss the future of the Period Equity Project with Webster Administration and Facilities.
