Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Webster University
Webster University’s history sets us apart from other institutions. Diversity, equity and inclusion are a part of our DNA. The University has always led conversation and action to meet the challenges facing society. Starting as a women's college in 1915, Webster has consistently aided underserved populations with its mission of providing a high-quality and affordable education that transforms students for global citizenship and individual excellence.
Gifts to this fund are used to support a variety of student programs and needs, including scholarship support, study abroad opportunities, as well as the annual Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Conference.
Founded in 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri, by Sisters of Loretto, a Catholic religious organization, Webster was one of the first Catholic women's colleges west of the Mississippi River. It was progressive for its time, providing higher education to women.
In 1950, Jeannette Mae Jackson and Janet Irene Thomas were the first two African Americans to graduate from Webster University. Jeannette and Janet were the face of Webster’s early emphasis on inclusion. Today, more than 41,000 African Americans have earned nearly 47,500 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees from Webster University.
The Jackson & Thomas Society recognizes Jeannette and Janet and demonstrates our long-standing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We invite Webster University alumni and our friends and colleagues to join the Society and make a gift in support of today’s students.
