This fund is established in honor of Tom Lang who served as a chair of the Department of Art, Design and Art History for 30 years and taught at Webster University for 50 years. What a remarkable legacy! Tom retired last year, leaving a great impact on countless former students and colleagues.
The Tom Lang Art Scholarship will be merit-based and will be awarded to students in Webster University’s Department of Art, Design and Art History at the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts who are Juniors or Seniors majoring in Studio Art. Recipients will be selected by faculty members.
About Tom Lang
Tom started at Webster University in 1972, and became the chair in 1990's. After visiting the Vienna campus for the first time in 1992, he taught there nearly every summer until 2012. His efforts made it possible for other DADAH faculty to teach in Vienna and was instrumental in creating a degree in Visual Art at the Vienna campus. Tom primarily taught courses in printmaking, book arts, drawing and papermaking.
Tom served on various University task forces and committees, including Faculty Executive Committee. Tom was successful as a chairperson and teacher in part due to his abilities to allow others to pursue their own curiosities. His teaching philosophy fostered a culture of support, creative freedom empowering and encouraging students in their studios.
